English (UK)   Major comedic breakthrough  -  Categories: News  -  @ 12:52:39 pm

Going to write a slightly more substantive entry later, but I've made a major achievement in the world of comedy.

I've just confirmed Henning Wehn at the Komedia tomorrow night - in German. I told him start times, duration, arrival, who he is on with and the money in German, and he replied in kind, and I understood. Seeing as I only did the language in school 15 years ago, I'm enormously proud of myself.

Be interested to read what you thought of the Henning Wehn set on Friday at Krater. The crowd tried so hard to enjoy him, and he worked really hard try to win us over... but ultimately racism is rarely funny, especially when it's provided by someone who casts himself as the aggressor. Perhaps he misjudged the political sensitivities of a Brighton audience; I fear he may go down a storm in Berlin or Norwich. Or is that a form of racism to even think that? Oh blimey...
Meanwhile, your cheery links were a sensation, and the other acts were well worth the entrance fee. Long may you rock.

Thanks Andy. I chatted to Henning after the gig about how I thought it went and like all comics, I have my own opinions on why these things sometimes don't work out.

I certainly wouldn't call it 'racism' though, and I reckon Henning would be disappointed to think it came across like that. Certainly you are right to say that a Brighton crowd is not the sort of crowd to suddenly hate someone because they are German, but I honestly believe the majority of the crowd didn't think he actually was German, and that he was doing a pretty odd impression instead.

Thanks again for your kind words, and see you at the venue again soon :)
